In August 2022, more than 130 daily newspapers published by the nation’s largest newspaper chain will cease publishing on Saturdays. The company is planning to transition most dailies to six-day print delivery, a move that is fast becoming industry standard. Since most newspapers now publish seven days a week, Gannett will focus on increasing the efficiency of their print product while maximizing the volume growth of their digital subscribers.
According to the company’s latest quarterly results, Gannett’s digital-only subscriptions increased by nearly 40% year over year. Digital ventures now account for roughly a third of Gannett’s total revenue. Its total revenue in the fourth quarter was $827 million, compared with $875 million in the same period in 2020. This decline is primarily due to declines in print advertising revenue.
